Several important bacterial diseases continue to present problems to the health and welfare of U.S. chickens and turkeys. The ability to reduce the use of antimicrobials in U.S. poultry will be predicated on our ability to reduce the incidence of these key diseases.

  • Necrotic enteritis, colibacillosis, and gangrenous (clostridial) dermatitis are some of the most important diseases of chickens that require antimicrobial therapy. Many of the respiratory diseases affecting chickens are caused by E. coli.
  • Clostridial dermatitis, bacterial enteritis, and colibacillosis are some of the most important diseases of turkeys that require antimicrobial therapy.

  • The datasets represent approximately 85% of broiler chicken, 70% of turkey, and 45% of eggs produced annually, based on USDA:National Agricultural Statistics Service published numbers
  • The broiler data for 2022 include information on approximately 8,460,000,000 chicks placed, 7,990,000,000 chickens slaughtered, and 51,680,000,000 pounds liveweight produced
  • The turkey data for 2022 include information on more than 173,000,000 poults placed, 151,000,000 turkeys slaughtered, and 4,700,000,000 pounds liveweight produced
  • The egg layer data for 2021 include information on approximately 148,000,000 average hens in lay and 3,500,000,000 dozen eggs produced
